Several local jurisdictions from across the New River Valley have been awarded grants to help support programs to prevent terrorism throughout the Commonwealth in announcement made by Governor Timothy M. Kaine.
Those local jurisdictions include Floyd County ($5,000), Giles County ($1.935); Narrows ($4,800), Pearisburg ($4,180); Rich Creek ($3,068); Glen Lyn ($3.068); Pembroke ($4,806); Dublin ($1,888); Town of Pulaski ($5,000); and Pulaski County (Pulaski/Dublin) $5,000. “Our men and women in law enforcement are vigilant in combating terrorist activities and these dollars will continue to support their efforts,” Governor Kaine said. The grants are drawn from federal funds allocated to Virginia from the Department of Homeland Security’s Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Program. Localities applied for the grants and selection was based on the project description and need. Funds were capped at $5,000 per locality and no match was required. The grants will be used by localities to buy personal protective equipment.
The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) administers the grant programs. DCJS’s Criminal Justice Services Board (CJSB), the policy board appointed by the Governor to act on matters affecting the criminal justice system, reviewed and approved them. In total, the CJSB approved 53 grants to towns, cities and counties.
