As the embers from the beginning of the United Auto Workers February 1, 2008, UAW picket-line area barrel-fires still glowed at 8 AM on March 15th, so did many faces within the crowd of members that hoped for a ratification agreement between them and Volvo, North America.
Solidarity, good organization, and discipline was praised by Lester Hancock, UAW Local 2069 official, and interviewees, as they appeared ready to return to work. A sense of pride was abound; brotherhood well instilled. The full-disclosure of the agreement, held at Edwards Hall, New River Community College, Dublin, VA, began at 9 AM, Saturday, March 15th, 2008; the 2nd grouping of members met at 1 PM. Ratification voting continues until 8 PM, March 15; results are expected to be announced during the early AM hours of March 16, 2008, according to Hancock. The three-year agreement provides a $2,000.00 signing-bonus, followed by a 2% wage increase for 2009 and 2010. The retention of about 600 workers that had been planned for lay-off was a "positive." Several issues were addressed, including safety for workers. According to several of the UAW members, safety was their main concern. Outsourcing too much of Volvo's production was also a consideration, according to several members. Some stated that they "want to insure a quality product, from our in-house sources." Detailed contract information will be upcoming, here at everythingnrv.com. Volvo UAW member "Chucky" Anderson said that he was "impressed by the positive relations with the police, especially the State Police, regarding instructions for awareness of the responsibilities of the strikers." He, with nearby Volvo friends concurring, agreed that community support from businesses and residents was paramount. "I feel that this community is more of a real family than ever before." "We didn't want any "winners" or "losers," we just wanted what we felt was right for all Volvo workers. It's been inspiring to see our solidarity hold tight for seven weeks." On a personal note, Anderson said that "I'm looking forward to continuing my music; me and Don and the Deltones will be playing in some local venues soon." Other notes of potential ratification were heard; a UAW member was saying that he "needed to help get his son's car repaired;" other everyday needs may be addressed if agreement is made. The friendly crowd, some strained from picket-line duty, appeared somewhat relieved and refreshed. Perhaps ratification is a "go." Many said that they were happy that many aspects of the agreement would result in not having to re-negotiate so much in upcoming years. As mentioned, contract details and the vote-count results will be announced soon, here at everythingnrv.com Photos by Larry Middleton
