UAW, Volvo Reach Tentative Agreement As Strike Prepares To End Its Sixth Week PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Grimes

As the strike prepares to conclude its sixth week, its was announced Tuesday night that United Auto Workers and Volvo Trucks North America have reached a tentative agreement on terms of a new three-year agreement that would cover approximately 2,600 UAW members at the New River Valley plant.

In a news release from Volvo North America representative John Mies, he states "Further comment about the proposed agreement is being withheld pending ratification by UAW Local #2069.  The UAW is scheduling ratification meetings.

Tim Barnes, Vice President of UAW 2069, told EverythingNRV.com Tuesday night as he stood on the picket line, “the union workers will review the contract offer either Friday or Saturday at Edwards Hall at New River Community College. We’re not sure what day we will meet, since classes will be in session at the college.”

Barnes would not elaborate as to what the new contract contained or as to rather the union received everything they had asked for. But he did say that he thought it was fair contract.

“It’s all up to these guys right here,” as he pointed to his fellow strikers. “They are the ones who will vote to decide if they will return to work or to stay on the picket line.”

The strikers we talked to Tuesday night all agreed that they are ready to return to work.

“I’m ready, but I’m not going to go back if the new deal is not fair, said one of the strikers at the plant’s main entrance. Other’s said they had heard about the tentative agreement, but did not know the complete details of it yet. We all hope it’s a fair one.

“I have heard rumors said one man, but I’m not going to say what I heard because they may or may not be true.”

Why not stand up for your selves
written by Terry, March 12, 2008
Employers take advantage of the employees any way they can. I know people who worked for 1 company their entire lives and did not really gain anything for their loyalty, except for a kick out the door. If employees don't stand up for themselves, no one will. GOOD FOR YOU 2069!!!!!
