As the strike at the New River Valley Volvo Plant approaches the end of its sixth week, more and more signs that read “This Business Supports UAW Local 2069” are starting to pop up throughout the New River Valley.
As the smaller white and blue signs can be found from Pearisburg to Wytheville and everywhere in between, some larger signs showing support can be found on the billboard at the Dublin Bojangles. Outside the entrance to the UAW Local 2069 Union Hall on Cougar Trail in Dublin, a large blue and yellow sign reads “Thank You For Your Support.” On this particular sign, more than 55 local businesses and organizations are listed. Some of the businesses include Hardee’s, Food Lion (Pearisburg), Sonic, Wade’s, KFC, Home Depot, amongst others. While some of the organizations include Pulaski County Social Services, Church of the Living God, Pulaski VFW Post 1184, Narrows VFW Post 6000, Nationwide Insurance, and Dublin Moose are just a few listed. “We [UAW Local 2069] appreciate all the support the community has shown us and we will not forget them,” said Lester Hancock, President of UAW Local 2069. Most of the restaurant we talked to said, they have donated food and other items. “We donate 50 sausage biscuits every Sunday,” said Nicole, a manager at Bojangles in Dublin, which also has posted on their outdoor sign, “UAW Has Our Support.” Kentucky Fried Chicken in Pulaski has donated chicken. “They [UAW] support us, so why not support them,” said Edward Adams, the manager at KFC. Sam Barnette, the manager of Food City in Pulaski, stated, “They [UAW] are part of our community and we need to help them out since many of them are on a limited income right now.” Another area grocery retailer, which has supported the union, is Wade’s. When contacted Monday afternoon, Greg Wade, one of the owners offered this comment, “I hope they get back to work soon.” Photos: (Top left) These small signs have started popping up all around the New River Valley.
