More than 300 parents and students turned out for Montgomery County Public Schools College Information Night held Thursday evening at Blacksburg High School. “I’m really pleased with our turnout tonight,” said Montgomery County School Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Anderson. “The whole purpose of tonight is to inform students on what college scholarships are available and how to apply for them.” The evening started off with welcoming comments from Dr. Anderson. Students and parents then had a chance to visit with the different colleges and community organizations, which were on hand to provide information on the different scholarships. Those colleges and organizations included New River Community College, Radford University, Virginia Tech, Army ROTC Program, Coca-Cola Scholars Program, The Community Foundation of the New River Valley, “Education is a Civil Right” Essay Contest Scholarship, The Gates Millenium Scholarship, Montgomery County Principal’s Association, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Samsung American Legion Scholarship and The Virginia Golf Foundation. In addition, parents and students were provided a scholarship resource guide with 300 more scholarships that are available. “My goal is to have 100 percent of our students to be able to go to the college of their choice,” added Dr. Anderson. The evening concluded with a presentations by Rebekah LaPlante, admissions specialist from Virginia Tech, who spoke about college admissions for four-year colleges and Deborah Kennedy, an admissions specialist from New River Community College, who spoke about the benefits of community college’s.
