Athletic ticket holders at Virginia Tech got a surprise today when they found that money had been taken from their banking accounts without their knowledge by the college.
One ticket holder reported that Virginia Tech debited his account twice, once for $1,400 and again for $1,100. The man reported he had bought season football tickets last year and had not authorized any further transactions. Several other ticket holders also reported the same problem of money being taken from their accounts.
Larry Hincker, Virginia Tech Associate Vice President for University Relations released the following statement to the media at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
“Today, the Virginia Tech Athletics Office has been made aware of a problem in which online ticket purchasers may have had funds erroneously debited from their bank accounts. About 1,665 accounts were affected. Those debits were processed in error. Security of accounts has not been compromised.
Virginia Tech been has been working with two independent vendors to rectify this problem. At this time, a recall is being processed. Any funds which were debited from affected accounts today will be credited to those accounts tonight. If overdraft fees have been charged, the banks should credit those fees as well.
Virginia Tech will notify via e-mail all those customers who were impacted as soon as possible.
