Will the UAW and Volvo be returning to the bargaining table soon? Volvo said Monday morning that they have contacted the UAW regarding suitable dates to meet. However, the UAW claims they have yet to hear anything from the company about negotiating.
In an email sent out late Monday morning, Volvo Spokesman John Mies said, “United Auto Workers International has contacted Volvo Trucks North American and requested a return to negotiations. The Company has acknowledged this request and has contacted the UAW regarding suitable dates.” UAW Local 2069 President Lester Hancock told EverythingNRV.com Monday afternoon that they had not heard anything from Volvo. “Neither myself nor our International people have heard anything about returning to negotiations or about any meeting dates.” Mr. Hancock gave EverythingNRV.com a copy of a letter dated Feb. 22, 2008, which was addressed to Mr. Roger Susanin of Susanin, Widman and Brennan, Counselors at Law in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The letter, which was written by Timothy Bressler, Assistant Director of UAW Heavy Truck Department read as follows: “Dear Mr. Susanin: I am currently reading Mr. Water’s letter to the Volvo employees dated February 21, 2008. Imagine my dismay when I read “Up to this point. The Chief Negotiator for the UAW has not made himself available for the continuation of negotiations.” Is this an out-right lie? or did you fail to tell Mr. Waters of our February 15, 2008 phone call where I clearly informed you of the Union’s desire to negotiate. In fact, we even discussed dates that did not work for you. Mr. Waters goes on to say, “When he does, the Company will be pleased to continue talks.” This only confirms my previous question; Mr. Waters obviously cannot have knowledge of our conversation. What is even more disturbing is the fact that we agreed I would contact you following the February 26, 2008 union meeting to discuss future negotiating. Isn’t it ironic that I contact and discuss negotiations with you on February 21, 2008 only to read Mr. Water’s letter describing my not being available on February 22nd. How is this possible? I am very upset with Mr. Waters’ distortion of the truth. To be absolutely clear to you and the Company you represent, this letter will serve as the second notification of the Union’s desire to negotiate. Please contact me at your earliest convenience with dates the Company is able and willing to bargain.”
Timothy Bressler, Assistant Director of UAW Heavy Truck Department in Detroit, signed the letter. Michigan. Thos morning, local UAW members will have the opportunity to meet with a representative from UAW International, according to Lester Hancock, UAW Local 2069 president. Hancock told EverythingNRV.com late Monday afternoon that the vice-president of UAW International would not be able to attend Tuesday's meeting due to flu. However, the meeting is still on, as a UAW International representative would be attending. Hancock said the meeting would be held at the Church of God on Bob White Boulevard in Pulaski and would not be open to the public. EverythingNRV.com will continue to follow this developing story and will bring you more details if and when they become available. Photo by David Grimes
