Stores have grand openings and re-openings. Now an entire community will get in on the act, as Downtown Christiansburg will be celebrating its grand re-opening on Saturday, June 14.
Following months of construction work to replace sidewalks, install new light fixtures and water pipes and improve landscaping along Main Street, Christiansburg officials felt this was the best way to showcase the many improvements made in the downtown business district. “We hope this event, along with several other planned activities will get people to visit our downtown area, support our businesses and see the many improvements we have made,” said Christiansburg Town Councilman Steve Huppert. The day will kick off with a 5K race starting at 9 a.m. From 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., around 300 Grand Classic Cruisers will line Main Street. There will also be plenty of music, as Don and the Deltones, along with several other bands, will be providing live entertainment from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the official ribbon-cutting of the grand re-opening will take place. In addition to the cars and music, there will be an area for the children with games and inflatable moonwalks, plus plenty of food. “This event is all about our downtown merchants and eateries,” said Huppert. “We will have local vendors, which will be from downtown. We will not have any vendors from outside the area.” Huppert also several other activities are planned for downtown, which include appearances of the Grand Classic Cruisers on May 17, June 14, July 12 and again on August 23 as part of the Montgomery Museum’s Heritage Festival. The vehicles will line the downtown streets from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on each of their visits, and the streets will be closed to through traffic, according to the councilman. “We are really excited about this and the other events we have planned,” Huppert stated.
