As the strikers manned the picket lines outside the New River Valley Volvo Plant, Senator Jim Webb met with UAW officials and the local 2069 membership inside the local Union Hall Thursday morning in Dublin.
Senator Webb met privately with officials from the local union, as well as the Regional and Asst. Regional Directors from United Auto Workers. He than addresses a crowd of around 200-plus union members who had showed up to hear the Senator and get the latest news on the strike. “This is a high quality plant because we have high quality people working here,” Webb said as the crowd started cheering. “You have my pledge that I will do everything I can to make sure that you continue to have the right quality of life in your work environment that you deserve.” After addressing the members inside, the Senator made his way outside the Union Hall where he walked across the street and started shaking hands and speaking with all of those manning the picket lines. “I think that it is really important for Virginia to have companies like Volvo here. I have spoken personally to the leadership of Volvo of America about the situation and about the strike,” said Webb. “We want very much for this to be solved and solved in a way where Volvo will be happy to continue working here because this is a large facility, but we also need to have this resolved in a way that can protect the workforce here. They do quality work, they do very valuable work and we want to make sure they are protected for the work they do.” The Senator also said, “I think I may be the only person elected to office that holds a Union card, has two Purple Heart Medals and three tattoos.” As Senator Webb shook hands with the workers, vehicles driving by were honking their horns, and the strikers thanked the Senator for visiting them. “I think it was really great that Senator Webb took the time to visit us today,” said one striker. “I will definitely remember this the next time the elections roll around.” Photos: (Top left) Senator Jim Webb shakes hands with striking union members outside the New River Valley Volvo Plant Thursday morning.
