A environmental cleanup is underway in Giles County following the wreck of a tanker truck carrying 7500 gallons off road diesel fuel and kerosene Thursday morning.
The truck, belonging to Foster Fuels based out of Brookneal, Virginia turned over in a sharp curve on Rt. 42, at the Flat Hollow Road turn at the edge of the Whitegate Community in Giles County. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time as is the condition of the driver who was taken to a local hospital. The wreck occurred around 8:30am Thursday morning.
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Regional and State Hazmat personnel on the scene told EverythingNRV that the truck was carrying a full load of fuel when it overturned. They managed to collect some 300 to 400 gallons that remained inside the tanker. They estimate 7100 to 7200 of fuel spilled, some into Big Walker Creek. Hazmat crews worked quickly to barricade the fuel, which found its way in to the creek. Hazmat Coordinator Bill McCroskey told EverythingNRV that he felt confident that they had been able to contain the fuel that had spilled into the creek.
The majority of the fuel spilled into the field where the truck overturned. W.E.L., an environmental services company out of Roanoke was called to the scene and immediately began efforts to contain fuel that was spilled on the ground. Pits were dug collecting the fuel that was still being pumped out into the evening hours. Officials with the company stated that more heavy equipment was on the way to the scene to begin excavation of the area to cleanup the fuel that had seeped into the ground. As of 7 p.m., officials still had no idea of how much area has been contaminated or how big of an area or hoe deep they will have to excavate. Drivers are warned to use caution if they will be using Rt. 42 at Whitegate as Hazmat crews; DEQ crews and cleanup crews with heavy equipment line the shoulders of the road.
EverythingNRV will have more details to the extent of the environmental affects as it becomes available to us.

| Gas Prices in the New River Valley |

Gasoline prices have retreated significantly within the last 10 days in the New River Valley. Convenience and brand often contribute to pricing, but not always. Most stations sell 'near-gas' - 10% ethanol/gasoline mixtures. Some of the newest 'cross-over' vehicles can use up to 100% ethanol. Photos by Larry Middleton, Tim W.
