The Blacksburg High School Girls Basketball team honored one of their own as the parents of former Lady Bruin Austin Cloyd, who was killed in the April 16th shootings at Virginia Tech, were presented her #52 jersey when she played for the school during the 2005-2006 season.
All of Austin's teammates from that season joined her parents at midcourt before the start of the Lady Bruins Christmas Tournament game with South County. There Coach Mickey McGuigan presented her parents with her framed white #52 jersey for them. Austin's blue road jersey will hang in the lobby outside the Blacksburg High School gym. Also Blacksburg renamed their Christmas tournament in honor of Austin. The tournament will now be called The Austin Cloyd Memorial Tournament. The emotional ceremony lasted just a couple of minutes but touched the heart of every person in attendance. All of her former teammates, coaches and her parents remembered Austin's drive in achieving her goals and especially her smile and positive attitude that she always had. Even though she was at Blacksburg for a very short time, she touched the lives of many of her friends and peers and everyone will miss her deeply.
