Blacksburg High School’s DECA students are making a difference this Holiday Season. To ensure that every Blacksburg Elementary School child has food items available during the holiday break, the DECA officers have organized a first-year philanthropy project entitled “Home for the Holidays” to provide over 150 bags of breakfast and lunch foods for local children who rely on free or reduced lunch each day at school.
Bag sponsorships of either $15 or the eight items chosen for the project have been given by Blacksburg High School clubs, VT Engage participants (Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and community members), and other dedicated Blacksburg residents. DECA students will be hosting a food drive at the Kroger on South Main Street in Blacksburg, Virginia on Sunday, November 18, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. to ensure that our goal of providing over 150 bags is met. The bags will be assembled on December 11, 2007 between 8:25 am and 9:00 am during the DECA club meeting. The bags will then be delivered to Kipps Elementary School, Margaret Beeks Elementary School, Gilbert Linkous Elementary School, Prices Fork Elementary School and Harding Avenue Elementary School prior to the ten day winter break for Montgomery County Public Schools. DECA, a co-curricular organization for Marketing students, offers service, leadership, social and career opportunities for high school students. BHS DECA has 122 members.
