At a time when Roanoke increasingly is in the arts and culture spotlight, the city has launched a new brochure and Web site to increase awareness of its public art program and collection. The brightly colored brochure and Web site at www.roanokeva.gov/publicart showcase the city's two- and three-dimensional art pieces, from outdoor sculpture such as Albert Paley's "Aurora" at the Roanoke Regional Airport to John Will Creasy's "Shrimpers" located in the Roanoke City Courthouse. "Many of the paintings are award winners from the annual City Art Show and often depict well-known locations in the Roanoke Valley," says Susan Jennings, the city's Public Art Coordinator. In 2005, the Roanoke Arts Commission began cataloging all the pieces in the city's collection as a first step in the Public Art Plan. "Each has been catalogued, checked for any needed repairs, and Works are located at various public buildings including the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, Roanoke City Courthouse, city library branches, and the new Fire Station 1 among others. There are also many outdoor pieces. Future plans call for a walking map to be produced once the inaugural pieces of the Percent for Art Program are completed in 2008. Both the brochure and Web site provide detailed information on the pieces in the collection, the mission of the Public Art Program, and how the community can become involved in helping to shape the face of public art throughout the city. Copies of the brochure are available in travel/tourism offices, galleries, and attractions around the Roanoke Valley, online at www.roanokeva.gov/publicart or by contacting Jennings at 853-5652 or
