Once again the Center for Digital Government has named the City of Roanoke as a Leading Digital City. Roanoke ranked second in the nation for 2007 among the cities in the 75,000 to 124,999 population category.  Santa Monica, Calif., was awarded first place in the category.

Other top award winners for their population size are Aurora, Colo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Juniper, Fla.; and Lynchburg, Va. Roanoke was ranked first in the survey in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006.

"Technology has become an important tool for making our services available to citizens," says Mayor C. Nelson Harris. "The city's ongoing commitment to improving and enhancing its technology is demonstrated by recognition such as this. Congratulations to city staff for their continual efforts to provide information to our residents and visitors through this medium."

This annual ranking requires cities to complete a survey focused on how the city utilizes technology to offer e-government services, municipal wireless Internet access, and to plan for disasters. Roanoke's geographic information systems, the downtown Wi-Fi zone, and the variety of city services available on-line stood out among the competing municipalities. While Roanoke's Department of Technology helped to lead the way to this high honor, Web site management provided by the Office of Communications also contributes to the effectiveness of the city's Internet services.

"This recognition is proof that Roanoke continues to set the pace for the use of technology in the public sector throughout the nation," says City Manager Darlene Burcham. "I am proud to have employees who strive daily to make us an outstanding jurisdiction that effectively uses technology to serve our citizens."

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The center is a business division of e.Republic, Inc., a publishing, media and research firm based in Folsom, Calif.
