Local Colors invites you to take a walk downtown for lunch and step into another world. The 2007 season of Taste of Cultures, featuring the foods, entertainment, wares and activities of different cultures represented in the Roanoke Valley, comes to a close with its fifth event, a celebration of American diversity, Friday, Nov. 9.
The free lunchtime event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Century Plaza across from Fire Station One on Church Ave. Entertainment will be provided by the Rumbo Drum Corps, Roanoke-based percussionists ages 13 and up representing different cultures. Rumbo will lead an interactive team-building event and perform on the snare drum, multi tenors, cymbals, bass drum and ethnic percussive instruments, and founder Randall Gilbert will sing international songs. Randolph Walker and Britt Mistele will perform traditional folk songs as well as their own compositions and songs by other writers. Both have played in numerous musical combinations and in venues across Western Virginia. In addition, Cheryl Lunsford will perform vocals accompanied by guitar. Leo Straub will demonstrate painting graffiti on canvas, a skill he has practiced as part of Black Out Entertainment. He recently showed at the HipHop event at the Roanoke City Main Library Oct. 27. Be sure to sample one of America's favorite dishes, barbeque, available for purchase by Blues BBQ. Taste of Cultures is held rain or shine on the second Friday of each month from April through November. This event is sponsored by SunTrust and held in conjunction with Roanoke Parks and Recreation. Charlie "Bird" Parker was an American saxophonist and composer. As a young man, he moved to NYC to pursue a career in music. There, Parker met and played with a group of young musicians in Harlem clubs. In 1945, Parker and Dizzy Gillespie made the first bop (or bebop) records, becoming leaders of the bop movement in jazz. Parker's brilliant improvisations, noted for their power and beauty, soon earned the admiration of countless musicians. At what age did Parker begin playing the saxophone?
