Radford University recently received a second year of funding for a comprehensive geriatric nursing program. The program received more than $78,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
The HRSA grant, which was submitted by RU School of Nursing distinguished professor Virginia Burggraf, will subsidize the production of two DVDs designed to educate homecare facilities about mental health and end-of-life care. Funding will also provide continuing education for certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses who work in hospital care, long-term care and assisted living. The comprehensive geriatric nursing program is designed to place the importance of long-term healthcare front and center. “We hope to bring nurse practitioners into a long-term care focus,” said Burggraf. “More than 17 percent of the New River Valley population is over the age of 60, and the fastest-growing population is 85 years of age and older. Care of older adults is imperative.” Initial plans are underway to provide future long-term care education at RU, including an online course as well as a geriatric nurse practitioner program. HRSA is the primary federal agency designed to improve access to healthcare services for people who are uninsured, isolated or medically vulnerable. The agency provides leadership and financial support to healthcare providers in each state and promotes the training of healthcare professionals and improved healthcare systems in rural communities.
