In the state races, the incumbents kept most of the seats, while there a couple of newcomers heading to Richmond following Tuesday’s General Election.
In the House 7th District, incumbent Dave Nutter (R) held off challenger Peggy Frank (D) 6,664 votes to 5,976. Nutter claimed Montgomery County (5,016 to 4,246), Pulaski County (755 to 680), while Frank won Radford (1,050 to 893). In the House 6th District, incumbent Anne Crockett-Stark (R) will be returning to office after defeating William Thomas, Jr. (D) 9,317 to 7, 412 votes. Stark carried locality except for Pulaski County, where Thomas tallied 3,067 votes to Stark’s 2,613. In the turned ugly race between Ralph Smith (R) and Mike Breiner (D) race for the 22nd District Senate, Smith, the former mayor of Roanoke, defeated Breiner, a Roanoke doctor, 21,193 to 20,444. Smith won Botetourt County (4,500 to 3,404) and Roanoke County (9,852 to 8,967), while Breiner won Montgomery County (4,160 to 3,672), Radford (1,194 to 735) and Salem (2,719 to 2,434). In the 9th District, which covers Floyd County, Republican Charles Poindexter (9,776 votes) defeated Democrat Eric Ferguson (9,416) and Independent Jerry Booth (2,094). 12th District HouseDelegate Jim Shuler (D), who was running unopposed, will also be returning for another term, as well as, State District 21 Senator John Edwards (D). Overall, the Democrats now have control of the state Senate with 21 seats, compared to 18 for the republicans and one still too close to call. In the House, the Republicans kept control.
