Floyd County will get a new chief prosecutor, as county voters elected Stephanie Murray Shortt to that post last night by a wide majority.
Shortt (I), who was the acting commonwealth attorney for a year (May 2005 to August 2006) while current commonwealth attorney Gordon Hannett served a tour of duty in Iraq, garnered 2,579 votes to 1,380 votes for Eric Branscom (R). Shortt had the support of local law enforcement officials, while Branscom, who had defeated Hannett in May’s Republican primary, had more than nine years experience as a prosecuter in Montgomery County, Roanoke and Alleghany County. In other contested races in Floyd, Virgel Allen (R) defeated Cynthia Babb (D) 471 to 411 for the District B Board of Supervisors seat. Also, William Gardner, Jr., (D) defeated James “Jolly” Webb (R) 510 to 372 for the spot in District D. David Ingram (R), who was unopposed, returns in District A. Clay Link (I), David Sulzen (I) and Margaret Hubbard (I), who also all ran unopposed, will return to the county’s School Board. Sheriff Shannon Zeman (R), who was unopposed will be back for another term. Mary Turman (R) returns unopposed as the county’s Treasurer. Commissioner of Revenue H.M. Sutphin (R) returns after being unopposed and Wendell Peters (R), who was also unopposed, returns as Clerk of Court.
