An area man is facing numerous charges following a high-speed chase, which started at a Sobriety Check Point in the Town of Pulaski and ended shortly thereafter when the suspect wrecked on Interstate 81 Friday night.
At approximately 8:24 p.m. the Pulaski Police Department was conducting a Sobriety Check Point at Dora Highway and Route 99. During the checkpoint, Cpl. Morris came in contact with an individual identifying himself as Keith Smith, who came though check point, where he asked the driver for identification. The vehicle operator stated he did not have any identification. Cpl. Morris asked him if he was suspended and he replied, “Yes.” Cpl. Morris then advised the driver to pull over to side of road, but the individual actually took a left on Dora Highway and proceeded to flee the scene. Cpl. Morris was able to fall in behind the suspect on Dora Highway where he paced the suspect’s vehicle in excess of 70 MPH in 25 MPH zone. Cpl. Morris advised other units he was in pursuit of vehicle and requested assistance from Sgt Rucker who arrived at Dora and South Washington Avenue and observed the suspect’s vehicle cross the yellow line and pass two other vehicles. The suspect’s vehicle next proceeded through a stop sign without stopping, took a left, and proceeded south on South Washington Avenue. The suspect’s vehicle entered the northbound entrance ramp to I-81 and proceeded towards the Dublin Exit where speeds approximated at 100 MPH. At that time, Pulaski County Sheriffs Dept Sgt. Mitchell, Deputy Dobbins and Cpl. Johnson assisted Sgt Rucker and Cpl. Morris. The pursuing units were next advised that Virginia State Police were at mile marker 97 with spike strips. The State Police were successful in deploying the spike strips, which flattened both tires on front of suspect’s vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle continued with the flat tires where the driver attempted to get off the Interstate at Exit 98. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, where it came to a stop over an embankment. The suspect fled on foot for approximately 200 yards, where Cpl. Morris caught up with suspect and placed him in custody. State Trooper Newberry is investigating the suspect for possibly stealing the vehicle. Charges filed by Pulaski Police Department included: Driving while suspended, obstruction of justice, felony eluding, reckless driving, and resisting arrest.
