When Floyd County voters head to the polls next Tuesday, they will have a choice of 11 candidates running for five positions.
The only constitutional office being contested is that of Commonwealth Attorney. In that race, challenger W. Eric Branscom (R) will square off against challenger Stephanie Shortt (I). Those running unopposed for constitutional offices in Floyd County include, Republican incumbent H.M. “Maggie” Sutphin (Commissioner of Revenue); Republican incumbent Shannon Zeman (Sheriff); Republican incumbent Wendell Peters (Clerk of Circuit Court); and Mary Turman (Treasurer). In the Board of Supervisors race, Virgel Allen (R) is running against Cynthia Babb (D), both are running for the Little River seat held by Kerry Whitlock; and William Gardner, Jr. (D) is running against James “Jolly” Webb (R) for the Burks Fork seat now held by Diane Belcher. Incumbent supervisor David Ingram (R), who represents the Locust Grove area, is running unopposed. Running unopposed for the Floyd County School Board are Independent incumbents Clay Link (Copper Hill); David Sulzen (Little River) and Margaret Hubbard (Burks Fork). Independent incumbents Will Griffin and Michael Patton are both unopposed for seats on the Floyd Town Council. Kenneth Blackwell (I) and Jack Lawson (I), both unopposed, are running for the Soil and Water Conservation Skyline District. As far as the state offices go, Floyd County residents will chose between incumbent W. Roscoe Reynolds (D) and challenger W. Jeff Evans for the 20th Senatorial District. With the retirement of Allen Dudley, voters will have a choice of Eric H. Ferguson (D), Charles D. Poindexter (R) and Floyd County’s Jerry W. Booth (I) for the House of Delegates 9th District. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.
