United Way asks local organizations/programs interested and able to provide mental health services to the local community in direct response to the April 16 tragedy, OR programs addressing school violence, to apply for one-year grants of up to $25,000 from the United in Caring Fund. The deadline for submitting proposals is August 24, 2007.

Funds are limited; therefore United Way asks applicants to be mindful of this and apply in a cooperative spirit, not applying for more than is necessary. The United in Caring Fund committee will award grants on a competitive basis. Community information currently being compiled will be used to prioritize grant applications.

In addition to community recovery grants, United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd has dispersed $48,567 from the United in Caring fund directly to victims of the tragedy, or their families. United Way has initiated a second phase of assistance to victims and/or their families, in which victims and/or their families can apply for assistance from the United in Caring fund for specific unmet needs.

The United in Caring Fund has $321,000 in collections and commitments to date. Donations to the United in Caring are still accepted via the organization's website (www.unitedwaynrv.org), the telephone, or by mail to PO Box 6202, Christiansburg, VA, 24068 (indicate on check that the gift is for the United in Caring Fund).
