Time For Everyone To Take Notice……Our Opinion Print E-mail
EverythingNRV

Did you spend any time reading or listening to the news today?  One look at these headlines and even the most passionate, card carrying member of the NRA has to take notice.

Take a glance at the headlines:  one 14 year old goes on a shooting spree in Ohio, another 14 year old makes plans to turn his school into another Columbine, and has the weapons to do it…….including the one his mother bought for him at a gun show.  Take these headlines and add them to the events here in Blacksburg over the past 14 months.  Isn’t it time to make some changes in our gun laws?

We believe greatly in the thought that Americans should have the right to keep and bear arms.  The NRA spends millions reminding Congress and the Nation of this law.  But, the NRA also steps in to lobby against most every move Congress makes to put gun restrictions in place.  The NRA theory has been to fight any legislation.  They want us to believe that any legislation is just a front runner from us losing our rights to keep and bear firearms.  The NRA fights all legislation, at the expense of the Columbines and other tragic events that smart gun legislation might have prevented.

The NRA is an important organization.  They have an important role to play in protecting our rights.  But it is past time that they got into the act of protecting our other rights, the rights that say our law enforcement officers should not be gunned down in cold blood, that our students should feel safe and secure at the schools, colleges and universities.  They need to protect our rights that there should be legislation in place that doesn’t allow an ordinary citizen to be gunned down in our towns and cities.  The NRA wants to govern gun laws in this country – as much as they want us to have the right to keep and bear arms, they need to be as pro-legislation at keeping the guns out of the hands of those who mean to do others harm.
