Now that the General Assembly has reached its half-way point, some of the most important work of the General Assembly now begins….the passage of a two-year budget for the Commonwealth and a major new bond proposal to improve facilities at our colleges and universities.

This week was crossover, which always comes at the half-way point of General Assembly Session.  Crossover, which this year fell on Tuesday, February 12, is the day in which all House bills must be communicated to the Senate and all Senate bills to the House.  This meant a lot of work on the House floor.  The Session convened on Monday at ten a.m., and we did not finish debate and floor votes until just before eight p.m.

Tuesday, February 11, marked crossover, the half way point in the General Assembly session.  Crossover is the period when all of the legislation in the House has to be completed and sent to the Senate and all of the Senate bills have to be completed and sent to the House.

(Note: I wrote this Sunday night but have not posted it due to the fact that as each day passes, I believed the strike would be settled the following day. Obviously, it hasn't.........so here goes.)

In between times of updating the site last evening because of the fires and high winds, I took some time to read the many postings, on several websites (including this one) about the UAW strike at Volvo. A great many of the comments can be summed up in one word - entertainment.

This past week was a busy one; we are approaching cross-over – the final day for all legislation to be voted upon by its House of origin – and this means much longer days.  Monday we begin early, and we will likely be in session well into the evening.  The Senate will debate and vote on the remainder of their bills and communicate them to the House of Delegates before Wednesday, and the House must do the same.
