It's one of those things that most people will just avoid talking about. But for the life of me, I can not understand why. The Roanoke County School Board is considering a measure that would make it mandatory that student athletes must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to play sports. However, there are those - especially officials at William Fleming High School - who say that the proposal will negatively affect those schools with a large percentage of African-American students. There are some things in life I don't understand and this is one of them. |

You gotta love Ron White and his "tater salad" routine. I've seen it a hundred times but still laugh when I hear him do it. So, today is "tater salad" day. Besides, all the good blog names are taken. |

Let's hope this week is better than last. Last week I cut short my Memorial Day weekend to check into UVA Medical Center for a heart cath. It was supposed to be "in and out".......meaning "home by Wednesday". Didn't work out that way as I was in thru Friday and have to return for another heart procedure in the near future. I thank you for the emails during the week, even the one from WPSK's Scott Stevens asking me if they "had installed a heart" in me. No, they just reprogrammed my current heart not to listen to redneck morning DJ's. All in fun...............I generally always catch part of Scott's morning show - right up to the time where he starts talking. |

As Forest Gump might have said, "I'm not a smart man, but I know what 'stupid' is". Ok, so that's not quite the way the line goes, but it is the first thing that came to my mind as I made a twelve-hour drive on Friday. I'd like to know who is in charge of the calender at VDOT. I'd like to shake their hand as the dumbest person alive. It was a Friday before Memorial Day and highway construction projects were all over Virginia. The two that gave me the most heartburn were on I-64 just west of Charlottesville and at the southbound lane of I-81 at the Ironto exit. |

In Our Schools: Could Montgomery County School Superintendent Tiffany Anderson be leaving her job for another? I certainly can't blame her, but the Board of Supervisors needs to step up and try to keep her. Overall, her perfomance has been good even though some people would take exception with that. And to those people and to those people griping about the 8.6% raise for teachers.......I say "shut up" and home school your brat. |
