Description: The Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department is located in the County of Pulaski. Just outside the City of Radford and 50 miles southwest of Roanoke . Organized in 1948 the Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department was Pulaski County's only Fire Protection in that end of the County. The Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department remains one of the busiest fire departments each year. With a roster of thirty volunteer firemen,
the department operates five pieces of apparatus and responds to an average of 150 calls a year. The departments busiest piece of apparatus is it's rescue engine , "Rescue Engine 25".

Professor shares prestigious award on new problem-solving theory
The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) has awarded its Frederick W. Lanchester Prize research award to Hanif Sherali, a University Distinguished Professor and the W. Thomas Rice Chair of Engineering in the Virginia Tech Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
Five departments recognized with Exemplary Department Award
The Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering, the School of Architecture + Design in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences' Undergraduate Research Institute, and a pair of departments working together, the Department of History and the Department of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education, will all receive the 2008 University Exemplary Department Award at a ceremony to be held Tuesday, Dec. 2 at The Inn at Virginia Tech.
