Description:

Greetings from Shawsville Elementary School located in the heart of Southwestern Virginia.  The school is set on approximately 20 acres in the midst of beautiful rolling hills.  Our school was built in 1972, and serves 260 students Pre-K through 5th.  The building utilizes an open-classroom model that allows faculty to maintain constant contact with students and other faculty members to provide support for classroom instruction.  Due to the hard work and diligence of our faculty, parents, and students we have been fully accredited for the last three years.

At SES, the development of reading skills is heavily emphasized using the following strategies:  1) Through the allocation of three reading specialists in kindergarten and 1st grade (This allows student to participate in daily small guided reading groups of no more than five or six students as well as in the Reading Recovery Program); 2) Students in Preschool-2nd grade students utilize two computer-based reading and writing programs on a daily basis; 3) Volunteers are matched with students needing extra assistance through the Book Buddies tutorial program; 4) and students are provided incentives through the Accelerated Reader program that provides students with computerized assessment on books they read independently.

Shawsville Elementary School utilizes the Continuous Improvement Process to have community members, parents, and teachers determine goals for school improvement.  The PTA supports the work of the school in many ways including fundraising, volunteerism, and planning and implementing special programs and activities for students.  At Shawsville Elementary School, the education of every child matters.
