  • Dow Water Solutions launches partnership with Virginia Tech, University of Texas at Austin
    Dow Water Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) and global leader in water purification, seawater desalination, contamination removal and water reuse solutions, has reached a multi-year joint development partnership with Virginia Tech and the University of Texas at Austin on the research and development of oxidation-resistant reverse osmosis (RO) membranes.

    Does the responsibility of an engineer cease after providing professional advice or does it involve additional advocacy? Consider such questions as whether oil fields should be established on the North Slope of Alaska or whether a renewed effort should be undertaken to build nuclear power plants. Should a dam be built that would help prevent flooding but severely impact the environment? Should robots be built that would increase manufacturing efficiency but put large numbers of people out of work?
  • Pamplin College of Business accounting professor receives national award
    Gene Seago, of New Castle, Va., the R.B. Pamplin Professor of Accounting at Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business, received the 2008 Outstanding Tax Educator Award, co-sponsored by the American Taxation Association and Ernst and Young.

  • University rises 12 places in National Science Foundation ranking based on 2007 research expenditures
    Based on research expenditures of $366.9 million in 2007, Virginia Tech ranked 42nd out of 662 universities nationwide, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Info Brief for the fiscal year 2007 Academic R and D Expenditures Survey, which was posted Aug. 21, 2008. In fiscal year 2006 (ending June 30, 2006), Virginia Tech ranked 54th with total research and development expenditures of $321.7 million.

  • Kostas Triantis named Ralph H. Bogle Professor Fellow of Industrial and Systems Engineering
    Kostas Triantis of Arlington, Va., professor in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, National Capital Region, was named the Ralph H. Bogle Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting on Aug. 25.
