September 5th, the Wayne Robinson Principles of Community Family Fun Run/Walk in conjunction with the local Branch of the NAACP will be held at Virginia Tech. The event consists of a 5K Run and Walk and a one mile run and walk. It is open to participants of all ages and experience levels. Proceeds from the Run/Walk benefit the Wayne Robinson Endowment. Check-in begins at 4:45pm, with the first race scheduled for between 5:15 and 5:30pm. The event concludes at 6:30pm. Wednesday, September 3rd. This week's speaker is Jim Cavanaugh, Coach for the Virginia Tech Hokie Football Team. Cost for lunch is $7.00. Food Service begins at 11:30 AM, at Custom Catering, located at the corner of North Main Street and Patrick Henry Drive. The complete program, with lunch, runs from noon until 1:00 PM; therefore, one may enjoy the entire program during lunch hour. Speakers from the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg High School Athletic Departments, with an occasional "outside" speaker, inform and entertain our membership. You may pay the annual individual membership dues of $20 ($30 per couple) at any weekly meeting, and they are good for one year -- July 1 to June 30.

Dorsett Miniatures On Exhibit (5:00PM)
A new exhibit, The Art of Space, has been installed at Montgomery Museum. From the streets of Chicago, to the dusty mining and ranching towns of the Judith Basin in central Montana, to an old depot in Virginia, Jim and Helen Dorsett captured space and invited imaginations. The regionally famous Dorsett miniatures from the old Cambria Depot will be on display at Montgomery Museum for the next two months. This is a rare opportunity to see these miniature works of art. A public reception to celebrate the opening will be held on Friday, September 5th from 6:00pm to 8pm.

September 06th at the Christiansburg Primary/Elementary School Grounds. Teams from Cave Spring, Galax, Hidden Valley, Virginia High School and Radford will be competing including Christiansburg. Time Schedule: 8:00am to 9:30am Packet Pick-up 8:00am Wide Open Race – 3.1 Miles – NO COST 8:30am 5th, 6th, 7th Grade Race – 1 Mile – NO COST 9:00am Varsity Girls 9:45am Varsity Boys 10:30am JV Girls 11:15am JV Boys AWARDS Will follow last race ASAP (near picnic shelter).Course: Most of the course is very hilly and demanding. 90% of the course is on grass, but there is some asphalt the runners will be running on. The course will be mowed and marked clearly with little yellow flags on both sides of the running area. There will be painted arrows on every turn so no one gets confused. There will also be road monitors to stop traffic if necessary. The course is an official 3.1 mile race. Teams should come dressed and ready to run. There will be no showers or locker rooms available. There will also be two porta-johns available for use. The Christiansburg Elementary School at the bottom of the hill will be locked and is OFF LIMITS!!!! The Shawsville Congregational Holiness Church will be having their 1st Annual Judged Car & Motorcycle show on Saturday September 6, 2008 from 10Am to 4pm. This show will benefit our youth department here at our church. We have approx 50 trophies to award including best of show for car and motorcycle and top of each class. We will have food , music and even a judged dessert bake-off in which the winner will also be awarded a trophy. There will also be activities for kids. Registration for the show is $5.00 per entry and admission is free for onlookers. So please come out and bring your car or motorcycle (new or old) and spend the day with us. The Ninth Annual Riner Heritage Day (10:00AM)
The Ninth Annual Riner Heritage Day will be held on Saturday, September 6. The 10 AM parade will be followed by activities for all at the area next to the Fire Department, on Auburn High School grounds. Bluegrass music, pony rides, kids' games, demonstrations by crafters, and good food will be on-site. The Riner Museum will have several special displays, along with the ones already in place. The Riner Fire Department will be displaying firetrucks, and giving tours of their facility.

Special Olympics To Host “A Taste Of Inspiration” (5:00PM)
Special Olympics Virginia Area Nine will be hosting a wine tasting, featuring foods from popular local restaurants, and a silent auction at Lane Stadium’s South End Zone Club at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Sept 17. A Taste of Inspiration, presented by Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, Prosperity Mortgage, StellarOne and DudleyCreative will benefit Special Olympics in the New River Valley and surrounding areas. This fundraising event will provide participants with a business-casual evening of fun and festivities, while showcasing the many opportunities Special Olympics provides in our community. The South End Zone Club provides a great vista for the event. Guests will sample specialty dishes from various local restaurants and taste different selections from local wineries, and wines from around the globe, hosted by Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg. Participating restaurants include Awful Arthur’s, Champs, Zeppoli’s, The Cellar, Texas Roadhouse, Kroger, Backstreets and Our Daily Bread. Along with the opportunity to network and learn more about Special Olympics, guests will be invited to bid on various items donated from area vendors or benefactors. 2008 Pesticide Disposal Program (9:00AM)
The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and the Virginia Pesticide Control Board will be sponsoring the 2008 Pesticide Disposal Program. Unwanted pesticides will be collected at the Montgomery County Government Center on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg on September 18 from 9AM-1PM. Only unwanted pesticides will be collected. Other materials that have been contaminated with pesticides (for example pesticide contaminated fertilizer) will not be accepted.
