2008 Civic Beautification Awards Nominations
Monday, June 30th is the last day the Town of Blacksburg will accept Civic Beautification Awards Nominations. The Civic Beautification Awards, sponsored by the Townscape Committee, are given annually to recognize landscapes and/or architectural improvements that enhance the appearance of the Town of Blacksburg. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the awards and the debut of a new sustainable environment award. Businesses, individuals, and organizations are encouraged to submit nominations. The award categories are: (a) Historic Preservation Category for preservation efforts that lead to historically accurate maintenance or restoration and additions to historic structures. (i.e. houses, businesses, gardens, trees, municipal structures, and other contributing structures).
(b) Neighborhood or Block Enhancement Award for special efforts (i.e. building improvements, rejuvenated or new landscapes, etc.) made to enhance the appearance of a neighborhood or block in support of Blacksburg’s Neighborhood Services Program. (c) Classic Category for a front walk and entrance, an herb garden, a flower garden, an orchard, a lawn, a vegetable garden, a shrub garden, an heritage tree, a parking area, an unique area of town or any combination, such as a vegetable and flower garden or a shrub and flower garden or a lawn and heritage tree(s). (d) Sustainable Environment Category recognizes new development or improvements to an existing property that contribute to a more sustainable environment. Nominees may include, but are not limited to: sustainable energy generation, energy conservation, sustainable landscapes, product recycling, rain gardens, and other water quality and bio-conservation measures.
Commercial and industrial businesses, single and multi-family residences, institutions, parking areas, and so forth are all eligible for an award Nominations are now being accepted, with judging occurring in July. Awards are presented at the Civic Beautification awards ceremony to which the public is invited on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roger E. Hedgepeth Chambers on the second floor of the Blacksburg Municipal Building.

The Blacksburg Aquatic Center Is Adding Another New Camp (8:00AM)
Ages 3 to 5. July 7th to July 11th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center. This interactive class will introduce children to art, fitness, and swimming in a semi-structured setting. The camp will involve a variety of art projects, story time, song, and activities in the pool with an emphasis on fun and social interaction. Participants must be potty trained. Participants should be dressed with bathing suit under street clothes. Please bring sunscreen, towel, and shoes. Snack will be provided. The cost is $37 for Blacksburg Residents and $47 for non-Residents. Don’t wait to sign up, spots fill quickly!

Blacksburg July 4th Celebration With The LandSharks (2:00PM)
For the 4th of July, come to Blacksburg for a free “Buffet” of music, fun, and fireworks at the Fourth of July celebration, sponsored by the Town of Blacksburg, Clean & Green Technologies, and Hawthorn Suites. 2:00pm to 3:00pm - Enjoy a parade sponsored by the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club. Afterwards, head over to Municipal Park, across from Blacksburg High School, for more fun including the Blacksburg Community Band at 6 p.m. Put on your flip flops and relax to music by the LandSharks, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, playing at 8:15 p.m. The sky over Blacksburg will light up with fireworks at 9:30 pm, followed by a LandSharks encore. First Friday At Floyd's Art Under The Sun (4:00PM)
Calling all artists and musicians! Next month's First Friday celebration falls on the 4th of July. Art Under The Sun Gallery is going to be About Music. Applications are open to any artist with art featuring instruments or musicians. "We are looking for art that's all about music," said founding member and artist, Karen Sewell. Art Under The Sun Gallery is offering a chance for artists work to be on display in the Gallery for the month of July. Any musician is welcome to play at the reception evening on Friday, July 4th from 4 PM to 7 PM. (Acoustic music only.) A music circle with musicians taking turns will be in the hallway between Art Under The Sun Gallery and Wildfire Pottery. People can plan on visiting the special art displays that have been set up for the holiday. First Friday events have been increasingly popular. "The gallery has been packed with people coming to see the art, hear the music and meet the featured artists," said member Patricia Robin Woodruff. It's really turning into a monthly must-see event for Floyd. With a variety of musicians at the reception, a fabulous (free) 4th of July refreshment spread and lots of beautiful art on the theme of music, you won't want to miss it! The Giles County RideRiverRun Triathlon & Relay (8:00AM)
Saturday, July 5th starting from the parking lot of the Food Lion in Pearisburg. The Giles County RideRiverRun Triathlon & Relay is a three-leg event (individual or relay) over a challenging yet beautiful area of Giles County, Virginia. The first leg is a 11.5 mile bicycle ride through paved, hilly, country roads from Pearisburg to Pembroke. The second leg is a 10 mile canoe course on the New River from Pembroke to Bluff City. The third leg is a hilly 5K run (3.2 miles) from Bluff City through the streets of Pearisburg. This race can be done either by an individual (solo) or by a team consisting of up to 4 participants.

Saturday, July 5th at 11:00am at Sinkland Farms, home of the Pumpkin Festival. Sponsored by the NRV Antique Tractor Club and Riner Volunteer Fire Department. Fun for everyone! 13 classes of tractors, antique autos, live music, food, kettle corn, ice cream, carriage rides, petting zoo, pony rides, facepainting and more!!!! There will be a kid's pedal tractor pull starting at 1:00pm. The BIG tractors (12,000 lbs and more) start the day at 11:00am. All tractor pullers should be weighed in and signed up no later than 10:45am. General Admission tickets are $5.00. Kids Fishing Camp (8:00AM)
Registration Deadline July 9th. Starting on Monday, July 21st from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Kids (ages 9 to 13) and fishing go hand and hand. What better way to spend your week than learning to fish with some of the best fishing guides in our area. Montgomery County Parks and Recreation and Tangent Outfitters will teach you everything from baiting a hook to hooking that big one. This camp will introduce you to a variety of different styles of fishing form small mouth fishing on the New River, rainbow trout fishing in private stocked streams and large mouth bass and cat fishing in local farm ponds. Camp staff, fishing guides, transportation, lunches, and all equipment are provided in this all in one camp. Cost is $475.

Southwest Vineyards - Tasting And Tour Virginia (9:30AM)
July 9th. Take a day and visit two wineries in the southwest Virginia region for tastings and tours. Itinerary: Depart the Blacksburg Community Center at 9:45 a.m., (please check in no later than 9:30am). Lunch will be at The Towne House Grille in Chilhowie at 11:30 a.m., followed by travel to Davis Winery in Rural Retreat then on to West Wind Vineyard in Max Meadows. Return to the center by 6:00pm. The cost is $12R for Blacksburg Residents and /$22 for non-residents. The fee includes transportation, tastings and tours at both wineries. Lunch is extra.

Dixie Girls Softball Tournament (3:00PM)
July 5th to the 9th. The Radford Parks and Recreation Department will host the District 3 Angels, Ponytails and Dixie Belles Dixie Softball Tournament July 5-9 at Veterans Field in Radford. Teams from Radford, Botetourt, Montgomery County, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Giles County will be competing. The games start at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Games on Sunday start at 2:00pm and during the week, all games will start at 6:00pm. Admission is $3 for adults (13 and up), $2 (ages 7-12) and free for those 6 and under.

4-H Summer Day Camps - Must Register By July 11th!!!!! (8:00AM)
Registration Procedures: Workshops are open to all youth, 4-H and non 4-H members. Registration for all day camps is due by Friday, July 11th. To register, bring registration fee (make checks payable to VCE– Montgomery) and a current health history form to the Montgomery County Extension Office, County Government Center, 755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg. You can download the health form at this site: http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/4hpubs/pdfs/388-906.pdf. If you do not have internet access, please call our office at 540-382-5790. Be a Youth Naturalist For ages 8 to 13. Monday and Tuesday, July 14th and15th 9:00am to 4:00pm each day. Meet at the Montgomery County Government Center Fee: $20 (covers lunch, snacks, and supplies). Be a naturalist like Lewis and Clarke. Learn about some of the local trees, butterflies, insects, wildlife and more. We will even have a GPS scavenger hunt. We will meet at the Montgomery Government Center and will head out to one of our county parks for a day of fun and learning about nature’s treasures. This program is sponsored by 4-H and the New River Valley Master Naturalists. It is a 2-day workshop. Tropical Rainforests: Just for Cloverbuds For ages 5 to 8. Wednesday, July 16th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Blacksburg Public Library. The fee of $20 covers lunch, snacks, and supplies. This program is just for our younger audience. We will learn all about tropical rainforests - about the insects, wildlife, foods, and cultures of these areas. This program will have lots of fun hands-on activities. 4-H Hike and Kite Day Ages 9 to 15. Monday, July 21st, departing the Government Center at 9:00am and returning at 4:00pm. Blue Ridge Parkway, Floyd. The fee of $20 covers lunch, kite, and transportation. We will head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County for a short hike, a picnic lunch, and kite time. We will make our own kites and will attempt to fly them (provided we have enough wind). If the wind does not cooperate, we will do Frisbees or softball. We will also do some nature photography. 4-H Geocaching Ages 9 to 15. Tuesday, July 22nd from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Depart from and return to Montgomery Government Center. The fee of $15 covers lunch and transportation. We will have a short introduction to GPS technology and will then head out for a Geocaching hunt. The goal is to find at least two treasures in the Montgomery County area using our GPS receivers. After treasure hunting, we will have lunch at Red Robin.
Museum of Natural History Field Trip Ages 9 to 15. Tuesday, July 23. Depart Government Center at 9:00am, return at 5:00pm. Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville. The fee of $25 covers entry fee, lunch, and transportation. We are heading to Martinsville to visit the Virginia Museum of Natural History. You can learn more about the museum and the many exciting exhibits at this website: http://www.vmnh.net/. Aerospace Adventures and Rocketry Ages 9 to 15. Thursday, July 24th. 9:00am to 4:00pm. The fee of $25 covers rocket fee, lunch, and other supplies. We will learn about airplanes, rockets, and space travel. We will build our own rockets, both Estes kits and bottle rockets, and will launch them at the end of the day. Make and Take Jewelry at Beadsburg Ages 9 to 13. Friday, July 25th. Depart Government Center at 8:30am, return at 12:30pm. Beadsburg in Blacksburg. The fee of $27 maximum covers fee for bracelet and ice cream. We will head to Beadsburg in Blacksburg for a morning of jewelry making. Afterwards, we will stop for lunch and ice cream on our way back to the Government Center. You do not pay this fee early. Please bring cash to this workshop. You will pay for your bracelet at Beadsburg (price will vary depending on your choice of beads). The maximum price for a bracelet will be $20. The other $7 will cover your lunch and ice cream.

Blacksburg Friday Night Out Concert Series (6:00PM)
The Summer Arts Festival 2008, a joint effort by Virginia Tech School of the Arts and the Town of Blacksburg, is celebrating its 17th year bringing the joy of the arts to Blacksburg summers. The festival's events are completely free and provide New River Valley residents; tourists; and Virginia Tech faculty, staff, students, and conference attendees with a wide array of arts attractions. The tremendously popular "Friday Night Out" concerts will continue in 2008 with a temporary move from Henderson Hall Lawn to Schultz Dining Hall Lawn because of the Henderson Hall refurbishing and Department of Theatre Arts' new Experimental Theatre construction projects. The new location is conveniently located just 100 yards away from Henderson Hall Lawn across University Mall Avenue that runs between Henderson Hall and Schultz Dining Hall and it is adjacent to free parking in the Shultz Dining Hall parking lot. The rain site will be the Old Dominion Ballroom in Squires Student Center located on University Mall Avenue next to Henderson Hall.
