On Saturday, March 1, 2008 there will be a celebration of African American history in the Town of Pulaski. The event will take place at First Baptist Church on Magazine Street. The program begins at 4:30pm followed by an old-time pot luck supper.
Pulaski has one of the most interesting African American communities in Southwest Virginia. Because of industrialization, the black population in Pulaski Town was a quarter of the population in 1900. Many of the oldest churches in the community are African American.

The program on March 1 will include summaries of historical episodes including the history of the African American business district, the first "cab stand," a series entitled "colored news" in the local newspaper, and the 1961 integration of Pulaski High School. Yolanda Hunter, Director of the New River Valley Competitiveness Center will be the guest speaker.
