Steppin' Out (10:00AM)
August 1st and 2nd from 10:00am to 10:00pm. Steppin' Out, Downtown Blacksburg's annual street festival, takes place on the first Friday and Saturday in August from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Steppin' Out features over 150 artists and crafts people from around the United States selling unique handcrafted items - jewelry, pottery, textiles, metal work, basketry, stained & fused glass, yard art, fine art, furniture, toys, artisan foods and so much more! Street performances make the scene magical . . . you could be greeted by a visiting Jedi Master, or have your wishes granted by the Blue Fairy. Downtown Blacksburg merchants also hold their much-awaited, final clearance sidewalk sales during Steppin' Out. Great merchandise goes at bargain-basement discounts. And those festival foods you love are provided by downtown restaurants. Admission is free. The Friday Night Jamboree At The Floyd Country Store (6:30PM)

First Annual "EastMont Tomato Festival"! (10:00AM)
On Saturday, August 9 at the Meadowbrook Center in Shawsville, the tomato makes a big boy return to the region with the first annual “EastMont Tomato Festival.” We’ll have contests for best-tasting, biggest and funniest-looking tomatoes, along with best BBQ sauce, pasta sauce, ketchup, salsa, tomato recipe, fried green tomato, and tomato artwork … just to name a few! We’ll also feature a Tomato Queen, tomato juggling, a tomato catapult, The Tomato Opera, and some musical tomato jams. Festival proceeds will go toward supporting The Meadowbrook Market, which opened in June to provide local growers and artists a place to sell their products and help build a more sustainable community.

Saturday In The Park - Car Show And Outdoor Movie (12:00PM)
Saturday, August 9th in Bissett Park. Come out and join us for a day of fun for the whole family by the New River in Bisset Park in Radford, Va. Some of the best looking cars, trucks, and motor cycles, will be on display. We will have live music for everyone to enjoy. Car show entries must register by 11:30 a.m. judging will begin at 12:00 noon. Awards will be given out at 2:30pm. Trophies will be awarded for the Top 50 cars. We will also be awarding trophies for the top GM, Ford, Mopar, Special Interest, and Best of Show. Plaques will be given to the first 100 cars that enter the car show. At 8:30pm a free outdoor movie will be shown at the Gazebo area. Concessions will be sold, so come early, have a picnic and watch the movie. Meet Your Teacher Family Fun Day (8:30AM)
The Elliston-Lafayette Elementary School “Meet Your Teacher Family Fun Day” will be held on Saturday, August 16, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Staff members are looking forward to another great year and meeting all of the families. The grade level parent meeting times are as follows: - Pre-K Parent Meeting 8:30-9:00am

At the meetings, teachers will share important information, classroom procedures and expectations for the new school year. Please be sure to attend these very important meetings. The school will also have games, Dave’s Moon Walk Rides, face painting, free school supplies, and cool summer treats for everyone. Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, Adventure Club, and Boy Scouts will be in attendance to allow parents to sign their children up to participate in these activities. Fees for these activities must be paid when you register your child. Saturday is the last day to sign up for parks and recreation fall activities without being charged a late fee. The Elliston Fire Department will have their vehicles on display and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s department will conduct child safety seat checks and hand out child find kits along with Vern Taylor from Farmers Insurance. The ELES PTSO is once again sponsoring the Clothing Closet. Parents are welcome to come fill a bag for each child for free. The school cafeteria manager, Theresa Hinkley, will also be on hand to meet families, answer questions regarding the free and reduced lunch forms and accept payment for meal accounts. She will also be glad to talk with parents about the new Café Pre-Pay Plan. This is a very exciting opportunity for parents. If you are new to the community, we welcome you. If you have not registered your child for school, you may do so from 8:30 a.m. to noon on this day. Please bring your child’s birth certificate and social security card with you to register.

2nd Annual McFarland/Sutphin Memorial Ride And Poker Run (8:00AM)
Saturday, August 16th from the Montgomery Regional Hospital rear parking lot. Registration begins at 8:00am – all bikes welcome! Opening Ceremonies begin at 10:30am. The cost: $15 for solo rider; $20 for two riders. Bikes out: Following Opening Ceremonies. Post-ride: Meal and Door Prizes!! New for 2008, a Classic Car & Hotrod Cruise-in/Car Show. Your vehicles are enjoyed by many and take people back to a time of fond memory. Your vehicles always draw a crowd and serve as a great conversation pieces. You may participate at the level you wish. Cruise-in or showcase your car in our show. Prizes for: Best Ford/Chevy/Mopar/Import and Overall Best in Show.
