On Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Library, Misty Gregg will present on creating healthy environments for children. Gregg’s will be the Blacksburg Library’s first “Go Green: Become a Green Samaritan” event, co-sponsored with Sustainable Blacksburg.
This event will address the question, “Why are so many children sick?” Today’s children are exposed to more toxins than ever before, in air, water and food. More U.S. children between the ages of three and 14 die of cancer than any other disease, and asthma deaths in children ages five through 15 have doubled in the last decade. The United States leads the world in juvenile diabetes cases.
Though thousands of chemicals are registered for use in everyday products common in many households, many have not been tested for their health effects on children. Gregg will instruct community members on how to make sensible choices and prevent unnecessary chemical exposures for children.
